Synopsis: The protagonist, a loutish and uber-cerebral antihero known simply as Dog, navigates the perilous paradigm shifts of our age, determined to find his proper place under the sun. Is he doomed to failure? Or will he pull it off by heeding his own irreducible voice, given the ebb of the old certainties?Dog pursues the answer unrelentingly, through an impassioned quest for identity and meaning. He revisits his relationships with women, family, literature, and homeland, in the process illuminating his journey with commentaries on history, religion, politics, and culture that unravel our very fabric.Marked by biting satire and tappings into lushest scholarship, Dog’s naked critique touches on some of the most pressing issues facing humanity: the arrogance of empire and organized religion, the persistence of bigotry, xenophobia, and social Darwinism, the double standards of sexual politics, the bankrupt rationale behind patriotism and state propaganda, and hypercapitalism and consumerism, among others. An ocean of struggles and epiphanies takes Dog to a spiritual ground zero called Virginland, where the story unfolds. It is also in Virginland that Dog unearths an ancient calendar based on a cosmic worldview. His discovery reveals the mythological underpinnings of the Zodiac, subverting the current conventional wisdom about the subject. What emerges from the protagonist’s odyssey is not only a cogent depiction of what makes us tick, but, as day follows night, a dazzling new vista for social and spiritual transformation.

With its vibrant style, thematic breadth, and, ultimately, unfettered sense of humanity, Journey to Virginland establishes itself as a groundbreaking literary enterprise and a true original.

My thoughts:

This fictional account of the character Dog took me on a physiological journey to places, ideas, metaphors, and wonders that I could only dream about.  Dog is on a journey to find the implications of life and self discovery. He is a very deep and unrefined character that invades our own ideas and understandings concerning topics of religion, politics, sexuality, men, women, and leadership.  I read every book with a completely open mind and allow the author through their characters interact with me and draw me into the story. I believe that in order to find the humor of Dog this is very important to read the sarcasm of Dog and allow the humor to unfold in your mind. Dog is a character that will take these subjects and dissect them like a frog in high school biology glass. The reader will walk away from the book feeling like maybe something is still left clinging to their body that will not wash off. I will admit that I had to go back and read several of the pages over the second time to be completely engulfed by the wit and humor of the subject.

The writing is raw, descriptive, and poetic at times, and just flowed beautifully. The subject matter will invade your sense of moral absolutes and twist and turn your inner thoughts like a Kansas twister. I highly recommend this book to readers that are willing to read this novel with a open mind and savor the humor as Dog invades your understanding of life.

I am giving this novel a 5 rating out of 5.

This book spans more than 20 years, describing the relationship of Blair and Danny and how one decision on the fateful night of wreck changed the lives of two friends with unfathomable consequences. Does Danny ever find out the truth that he was framed and does Blair ultimately obtain the political aspirations that he desires … you will have to read this novel to find out.

My thoughts

I loved this novel. Every year I only find a few books that I would consider reading for second time and this is one of them. I would not call the category of  this novel a mystery thriller because I knew from the beginning who created the crime. What made the novel suspenseful was what would happen next because of the fraudulent framing of Danny.  This novel is multi-layered with human traits of personal morality, alcoholism, greed, responsibility, accountability, loyalty, and betrayal. The novel takes the reader through each of these traits and how they affect the lives of people around them. The journey takes  some surprising turns and presents different accounts of faith, trust, guilt, shame and how those feelings can eventually lead to absolution, hope, and recovery. I found myself reaffirming my own views through the writing of this author.

One final thought that came to mind while I was reading this fascinating novel is that this book while not considered a religious book would still be a fantastic book that could be read by a Sunday School Class and discussed from a religious perspective. There are several  discussion questions in the back of the book which will allow the group to delve deep into their own beliefs. This is a great debut novel and I hope that Mr. Hayes is writing a second novel as my appetite is ready for more from this author.  It’s a great book; check it out!

I have given this book 5 rating out of 5.

Lauren Holloway was told that she is being promoted to the principle position at a Christian school and she prepared the perfect dinner for Tucker Kane, her fiancé, so that she could share with him the good news. Lauren becomes worried when Tucker doesn’t call and is late for the dinner that she had planned. The plot thickens when she finds out that the reason Tucker was late is because he was being questioned by the police about the death of his ex-wife, Margot.

More and more evidence was uncovered that clearly pointed to Tucker as being the killer of his ex-wife. Lauren stood by Tucker until one day he asked her to make up an alibi for him which meant she would have to make up a lie to the police in order to save the man that meant the world to her. Lauren’s Christian beliefs were now being tested. She was so shocked that Tucker would ask her lie for him. The next morning Tucker suddenly disappears – no notes, no text messages, no phone calls – he was gone.

My thoughts:

This story has so many layers. One layer is the ongoing plot of who killed Marlot. A second layer is how Lauren’s ongoing support of Tucker was viewed by families that brought their children to the Christian school. A third layer is how Lauren’s Christian beliefs were tested. While this novel is multilayered and complex it flowed beautifully with a twisted tale of love, murder, greed, suspense, heartbreak and joy.

Karen Young has exquisitely written a narrative that allows the characters to jump off the page. The dialog between the characters seemed so realistic even though the subject matter at times was complex.

One final thought, I love mystery novels and Lie for Me was refreshing to read. The novel seemed to settle in around me like a cool spring rain. I found the ongoing Christian moral undercurrent that existed with several of the characters allowed the novel in a subtle but natural way exhibit concept of good and evil – right and wrong.

I have given this novel a four rating out five.

Who should read this novel?

All mystery lovers will find Lie for Me a delight to read. This novel will also appeal to readers that love mysteries coupled with good solid moral beliefs. Finally, I would recommend this novel to romance readers.

The plot starts out with Skin Kadash discovering the body of an elderly homeless man in the bathtub of Ruby Jane Whittaker, a woman who he loves and admires. The plot thickens because not only is there an elderly homeless man that appears to have died from nothing more than age and poor health who now lies motionless in the bathtub of Ruby Jane’s home — Ruby Jane is no where to be found. Kadash knows there is something truly amiss and he intends to find where Ruby Jane has gone and why. Kadash awkwardly get hooks up with Pete McKrall, a past lover of Ruby Jane, and the two of them plan to work together on finding Ruby Jane. This leads them to Preble County, Ohio, the location where Ruby Jane grew up.

The second part of the book is of a much earlier time in Preble County, Ohio when Ruby Jane Whittaker was growing up with her fanatical family. Ruby Jane is resourceful, intelligent, and has a very short fuse when it comes to dealing with people that cross her. She is a girl that loves basketball and running. Ruby Jane’s family is more than enough problems for her to handle; however,  she also has to deal with sassy in your face students at school that seemed to always get her in trouble with her basketball coach. These school problems were only the tip of iceberg with what she had to be concerned with – she had much deeper concerns to clean up in her life when came to dealing with her dysfunctional family.

The third part of story brings the reader back to present where Skin Kadash and Pete McKrall are pursuing every clue in Ohio. This search leads them to some clues and many more loose ends as the secrets of Ruby Jane’s past unfold.

My thoughts:

While the first part of the story is Kadash’s first person narrative, part two is a  third person narrative from the point of view of Rub Jane. The ending part goes back to Kadash’s narrative and takes the reader to a gratifying conclusion. I quite enjoyed County Line. Bill Cameron drew me into this novel that became a page turner early on. Characters were well defined and they played off each other allowing the characters to be realistic. The plot is complex and not at all predictable.

Who should read this novel:

This novel would be perfect for anyone that loves to read murder thriller novels. I would also recommend this novel to people that like cozy mystery novels as they might like this one even though this novel can not be classified as a cozy mystery novel. I hope Bill Cameron is writing another thriller novel as I am now hooked on this writing style.
